本品是一种流变助剂，不仅可以使涂料增稠，防止施工中出现流挂现象，而且能赋予涂料优异的机械性能和贮存稳定性；通过在乳胶粒与颜料之间架桥形成网状结构，增加体系的黏度；调节流变性，使胶黏剂和密封剂增稠，防止填料沉淀，赋予良好的物理机械稳定性；控制施工过程的流变性(施胶时不流挂、不滴淌、不飞液)，还能起着降低成本的作用。特别对于胶黏剂和密封剂的制造、储存、使用都很重要，能够改进和调节黏度，获得稳定、防沉、减渗、防淌、触变等性能。

水性增稠剂在各类食品的作用：

1.在石油工业的油田化学领域可用作钻井液的增黏剂、降滤失剂及黏土稳定剂等。

2.在冶金方面用作铸造过程的砂型黏合剂，使砂型耐用铸件质量改良。

3.在纺织方面可用于合成纤维改性,使化纤印染牢固、耐晒且光泽鲜亮。

4.将其加入到陶瓷坯体用作陶瓷料浆减水剂且对坯体干燥强度有一定的增强作用。
